So this is an article that I wrote a while ago. I enjoyed writing it so much, I decided to make this blog. I thought it fitting that it should have its own blog post. Enjoy! And comments are very much appreciated :)
A woman holds the love of her life and as the last breath slips from his battered body, she begs him to stay as she finally whispers the confession of love he’s been waiting to hear. A bright, ambitious, and inquisitive 16 year old girl held back by her old fashioned father gives up everything she has in order to achieve her life-long dreams. A young man battles the very minions of hell to save the woman he loves. And a woman of unparalleled kindness becomes friends with the outcasts and forgotten members of society. An empire of creative genius equal to that of The Walt Disney Company has yet to, and most likely will never emerge. Nearly every family in Western culture is familiar with the stories of adventure, achievement of dreams, and timeless love that are the backbone of nearly every Disney saga. Of course among those tales, the most well known are probably the stories of the Disney princesses. And I for one am tired of those who generalize and stereotype the Disney princess movies into chauvinistic close-minded false representations of what life should be.
First of all, let’s be clear: The first Disney princess movie (Snow White) came out in 1937. You read me right; NINETEEN THIRTY SEVEN. It’s hardly fair to judge a movie from the early 20th century by the standards of 2011. Quite obviously, the roles of women were very different back then. Let’s take a brief look at Snow White in context of the time period. America had been in the most crushing depression in its history. Women of the time had to work, probably for the first time in their lives, in order to support their families. This whimsical departure from reality into a world of love at first sight and random musical numbers that Snow White provides would have been a welcome escape. You can whine about the prince always saving the princess all you want but the fact is that the majority of the women in 1937 didn’t want to be out “battling dragons.” They wanted to be home raising their children as their handsome “princes” fought off the evils of the world and came home to bestow on you a romantic kiss. And while thankfully, society has made the transition into a world where many women have successful careers and work in the same environment as men, it’s simply impractical to judge these cartoons in that context.
As a life-long Disney fanatic (No seriously, my dishware is all Disney, I have a Mickey Mouse house key, and one time when I was bored I made my own Disney princess online. Sue me.) I’ve been bombarded by overenthusiastic feminists who cry and wail about how degrading the Disney princesses are to women. So here are my responses to some of the more popular arguments.
“Disney princesses only have happy endings because they’re pretty.” Fair. Aurora actually had divine intervention to prevent her from being an eye sore. But the theme of a Disney princess movie has never been and will never be “Only pretty girls get to live happily ever after” and anyone who says that needs to get a boyfriend and pay a little bit closer attention to the movies. Of course the princesses are gorgeous, have unrealistic body proportions, and no matter how many times I try, my hair will never look good if I try to mimic Belle’s hairstyle. But it’s their inner beauty that sets them apart from others. Take Cinderella for example. It’s true that the prince first noticed her because of her looks, but if you’re telling me that there’s a Prince Charming out there who is going to walk up to the homeliest girl in the room and go out of his way to get to know her, you’re the one living in fantasy. But her beauty isn’t the reason he falls in love with her. They dance until midnight and while we had to listen to “So this is Love” while they had their first conversation, we can assume that they got to know each other and he fell in love with who she was. Prince Eric falls in love with Ariel only after he takes days getting to know her. Aladdin’s response to why he loves Jasmine goes in this order- smart, fun, and only when asked about her physical appearance by Genie does he exclaim “BEAUTIFUL!” And if the entire charm of a Disney princess was in her face, they would be the only beautiful girls in the film. As it is, the villains are sometimes just as attractive: Cinderella’s step-mom isn’t looking too bad and was probably a solid 7 in her prime. Maleficent may be a little intimidating and have a freakishly long neck but some guys are into that. And did you all forget that the evil queen was the fairest in the land until Snow White hit her teens? It’s the girls’ personalities that set them apart; not their looks.
“They just sit around and wait for their prince to save them.” *Please see second paragraph* Continuing on. Not all princesses have the wait-and-see kind of attitude. Prince Eric wouldn’t have been able to impale Ursula with a ship if it hadn’t been for Ariel’s help. Not to mention, she saved him from drowning. Cinderella escapes with the help of her animal friends in order to try on the glass slipper against the will of her step-mother. And Belle isn’t saved by anyone. In reality, she’s been battling off Gaston by herself throughout the entire movie.
“Disney Princess movies show unrealistic love stories.” DUH. I have to say it again. DUH. Of course the love affairs of the Disney princesses are unrealistic! They’re movies! I hate to break it to you but it’s almost the year 2015 and although Back to the Future II said so, there are no flying cars or hover boards yet. In addition, a house cannot be lifted by a bunch of helium balloons, Darth Vader does not live in a galaxy far far away, Hogwarts doesn’t exist (I know, it hurts me too), and it’s impossible for all of Charlie Brown’s clothes to instantaneously fly off his body when the baseball whips past him. So what if it’s unlikely? The point is to entertain, not represent the real world. Go watch a documentary if it bothers you that much. And if you’re a stickler for realism, I think you should be focusing more on the whole “part fish part human” thing Ariel’s got going.
Above the entrance to Disneyland the plaque reads “Here you leave today and enter the world of yesterday, tomorrow, and fantasy.” I would argue that the same principle applies to all Disney movies. The intent is not to make a comment to society that women have to be ridiculously good-looking in order to achieve happiness. It’s not that women should stay home with a smile on their faces and clean with their animal friends while the men are out slaying dragons and sea witches. And it’s not that love befalls only the attractive few who have beautiful singing voices and serenade one another from the balcony…. Oh and there has to dwarves involved. For people who only get those messages from Disney classics, I truly feel sorry for you. I understand that the Disney princess movies advertise that kind girls are the ones the princes fall for, that women have control over their own destiny, and that true love is something worth fighting for. For the most part, the world is made up of hard, pessimistic people who’ve forgotten what it was like to be a child and know without a doubt that Santa was coming down the chimney any second, everyone told the truth, and Belle really did fall in love with the Beast. I myself am one of those extremely sarcastic, cynical people (I didn’t care for The Notebook, PDA makes me sick, and I’ve never read a Nicholas Sparks book), but what I love so much about Disney movies is that for those brief 92 minutes, I’m a child again. And I do believe. And like Walt Disney said, “That’s the real trouble with the world, too many people grow up. They forget.”

Happiness is...
Well I've been home from Provo for four days and I must say, it's been a fantastic break so far. I've barely left the house but I wouldn't have it any other way.
On Tuesday, I woke up at 6 am so I would have enough time for some last minute studying and the last three finals. I finished my last test at 4:30 and was in the car, on the road to Vegas by 4:45. Clearly, I was ready to get home. So what have I been doing for the last few days?
Well, I went in to Regan's kindergarten class on Thursday and Friday to help out. I had so much fun. She kept running up behind me while I was stapling or talking to the teacher, giving me the biggest hug, and saying "Kelsey thank you so much for coming to school today." We made gingerbread houses, gingerbread men, gingerbread hats, necklaces.... We were learning G for gingerbread. So much fun!
I went to see Sherlock Holmes 2 yesterday. Most people know that I have a little obsession with Robert Downey Jr. I might be biased because I'm really lucky and have met him a couple of times but let's be real here... he's an amazing actor and ridiculously good looking. One of the times we met was on the set of the second Sherlock in London. I know, I'm the luckiest girl in the world. So it was a mind-blowing experience to see the scenes we'd seen in real life show up on screen.
Let's see.... other than that, I've been laying around the house taking naps, watching Christmas and Disney movies, eating delicious homemade food, and hanging out with my favorite people on earth. I guess now that I've been home for a while and had time to recover from the semester, I can go out and see people. But to be honest, the last few days have been almost perfect. I love Christmas :)

Why my life is wonderful
Ok apparently I'm not such an expert at blogging. Because I wrote this at the beginning of the month thinking I posted it but here I am thinking about blog ideas and I saw this one saved to drafts. SO here goes my lazy self using a month old post. However, I feel the content is worth publishing.
So November was sort of a crazy month for me. For some reason, all of my teachers decided that the last round of finals, all term papers, and projects would be due the week before Thanksgiving. Since I was running around like a crazy person and spent the four day break recovering, I didn't have time to sit down and write down a list of things I'm grateful for. And I think Christmas is just as good of a time to remember our blessings. This list is not all inclusive obviously.
Soooo. I am thankful for...
a wonderful, supportive family
some fantastic friends spanning from Oregon to South Korea who are practically family
an education at an excellent university that I don't personally have to pay for
an apartment that doesn't have dirt floors and that I have my own bedroom & bathroom
being from Las Vegas
my talents and capabilities
that the RUNNIN REBELS are ranked #19!!
music
a healthy body and mind
perfect vision (thanks to Lasik)
a 7 year old brother who beats me in chess and plays with my hair
a car that works
my puppies Zeus and Linus
professors that care about their students
my love of books
a great memory & the uncanny ability to procrastinate and pull off A's and B's
the color yellow
the BYU Women's Chorus and Sister Applonie (the conductor)
MY OWN UNDERGROUND PARKING SPACE
the fact that I live 3 minutes away from campus
my little sister who calls me her best friend and likes princesses as much as I do
a best friend on a mission who keeps me positive
my iPhone. Yes I'm serious. It belongs on this list
a selfless mother who is a constant role model and the most devoted friend and cheerleader
the opportunities I've had to be onstage
a brother who shows me that there are good men left in the world
Disneyland, Disney movies, Disney music.... basically all that is Disney
a wonderful childhood with priceless memories and unlimited opportunites
my $10 yellow heels
the fact that I've never been homeless, starving, or severely ill
a dad who is the greatest supporter of my dreams and the funniest person I've ever met
my footie pajamas
a laptop that works
Double stuff oreos and homemade carne asada
the fact that I was able to achieve one of my dreams last year by visiting London
my Princess Bride book that is now in 7 different pieces
my basket that I bought from Borders before they closed down
(I am not grateful that Borders closed)
the Goo Goo Dolls
the three times I saw Wicked
a best friend/sister who will always be in my life whether I want her to or not
all of the yellow accessories in my bedroom
the Christmas season!
mechanical pencils. Regular pencils suck.

Finals... oh finals.
Yes that's right. Finals have.... finally.... come upon us. Personally, I love finals for a number of reasons. #1- it means that the semester is over. #2- Unlike midterms, during finals time, you don't have class so you can adequately prepare. #3- During finals time, I can pretty much justify eating as much as I want. I mean I NEED the energy. This is my future we're talking about. But as the end of my third semester draws near, I'm beginning to reflect on what it is I've actually learned.
Survey of World Religions- Seriously, every single religion I've studied has the same basic message. I've officially come to the conclusion that the only reason we've had so many religious wars is because of ignorance. If people took the time to educate themselves about other religions, they'd understand that they're all advocates of peace, love, acceptance.... being a good person. Yes, there are differences in composition; gods called by different names, polytheism vs monotheism, and theories on the after life. But religion does not cause hatred and war. People do.
Greek & Roman Lit- You do not need to read the material if the teacher summarizes and highlights important points to know about each work in class. To be honest, this isn't a new lesson for me but knowing that really saved me some time in regards to this class. Also, don't kill your dad and date your mom. It won't end well.
Biology- The power of stumbleupon and Facebook. I hate science classes so I spent most of my Bio class time surfing the web. BUT the most important thing I learned from this class is that if you have a good TA who holds review sessions before each test, there's really no need to go to class (unless you have iclicker quizzes). I also learned that even the worst subject can be made somewhat interesting and enjoyable if you have a great professor.
Women's Chorus- A good rehearsal with awesome music and a fantastic conductor can change your mood for the rest of the day.
Art History- I cannot stress this enough. DO NOT TAKE A 2 1/2 HOUR ART HISTORY CLASS ON MONDAY NIGHTS. Awful. Awful. Awful decision. Don't get me wrong, the material was interesting and I actually think I retained more information in this class than any other, but I'm amazed that I got through the semester with my sanity intact.
Dance- Don't take an intro class when you've taken 5 or so years of clogging. You'll spend weeks learning how to shuffle (and not the cool LMFAO shuffle Julie). Also, if you have this class at 8 am and nothing else until 3, go to class in your pajamas and no makeup. Makes life so much simpler.
D&C- I need to get married ASAP and start having kids immediately because it's selfish of me to want to have a house and some money saved up for my family. I'll just move into married apartments and hope my kids don't want any Christmas presents for a few years. Also, I need to be out protesting gay rights with picket signs because I have to be actively engaged in the political opinions of the scriptures. Don't get me wrong- the guy is smart and I agreed with most of the stuff he said. But sometimes he just got under my skin.
There you have it. The big life lessons I learned from my last round of generals ever.

Why Kelsey Loves Christmas
So here's the dealio- I went to this guy's junior drum recital (I actually don't know him. I'm just good friends with a girl who's been dating him a bit. But I told her she needs to get serious with him because he's an amazing drummer and looks like Joseph Smith. Oh and the pianist who accompanied him looked like a Mexican Frodo Baggins. Like dead on. But I digress....) and when I came home, I had dinner, made my schedule for finals week, and crashed. Yeah I fell asleep at 7. So I woke up about an hour ago and of course, cannot get back to sleep. SO I decided to blog to pass the time (studying for my 5 finals next week? Ha. You're funny) and all I can think about is Christmas.
I know everyone says this but I LOVE Christmas time. It's my favorite time of the year. And yeah, like everyone else, I like getting presents, but I decided to make a list of what I love about Christmas. This is in no particular order.
1. Going back to Vegas- Now ever since I left for college, my trips down to Vegas are the best vacations I've ever had. Pulling up to the house and having two little kids jumping up and down in the driveway waiting for you is kind of a great feeling.
2. Spending time with family- This is kind of implied with #1, but I have to make it clear that the older I get, the closer I am with my family. I'd rather hang out with them than my friends any day of the week.
3. NO HOMEWORK- What's great about being in college is that the semester ends before the winter break. So unlike high school where you have projects and papers to do, I literally have NOTHING as far as school work. It's the most liberating feeling.
4. Christmas movies- And here they are in order of greatness (this is my list and I'm sticking to it. I'm sure my father and I will have a debate about it once he reads this:
#1- The Christmas Story
#2- The Muppet Christmas Carol
#3- How the Grinch Stole Christmas
#4- A Charlie Brown Christmas
#5- The Grinch
#6- The Santa Clause
#7- The Year Without a Santa Claus
#8- Santa Claus is Coming to Town
#9- Rudolf the Red-nosed Reindeer
#10- Elf
5. Christmas music- there are very few things in the world that put me in a better mood than the Josh Groban Chritmas CD from years ago.
6. FOOD. I cannot emphasize this point enough. I will always love grilled cheese sandwiches but I'm pretty sure that's been my dinner for the last 4 weeks. And turkey & mashed potatoes are simply the best foods in the world.
7. Fires- Yeah that's kinda weird to write but I didn't know how else to write the topic for this one. I LOVE sitting in front of the fireplace next to the Christmas tree and reading a good book with a cup of hot chocolate.
8. Presents- Ok yeah I had to write it down. Let's be real, who DOESN'T like getting presents? And honestly, it's not even about the actual present. It's about diving into the cornucopia, grabbing the first present and guessing what it could be. I love giving presents as much as I love getting them. No really, I'm not just saying that. When I'm not a poor college student with $76 to my name, I'm going to be the best present giver ever.
9. Christmas jammas- It doesn't matter if I'm at my mom's or dad's, I always get a pair of Christmas pj's on Christmas Eve.
10. "YAY!! TWO CHRISTMASES!!!" (If you don't get it, you don't get it.)- While I would love to have every member of my family together on Christmas, it's great to have the Christmas experience twice in one day. They're two very different affairs however. When I'm at my mom's, I get woken up at 6 am by two screaming children running downstairs. We have to have a "Santa" who distributes the presents according to age and we have to WAIT for them to be done. It can be excruciating... for the kids *cough cough.* My sweet mom just sits there with a smile on her face, taking pictures of everyone opening each present. And you can tell how good your gift is by how excited she gets as you're opening it. And there really isn't anything that compares to having little kids in the house on Christmas morning. At my dad's however, it's just the three of us- myself, my dad, and my almost 18 year old brother. So Michael and I pretend to be cool and casually walk downstairs and try to stop ourselves from yelling "A ZEPPELIN! That's MINE!!" (if you don't get it, you don't get it) and ripping our stockings off the wall. And while my dad may not be the most expert of wrappers, he's the king of tags. What I mean is, I've never gotten a present addressed "To Kelsey, From Dad." Oh no, it's usually "To Kboo, Love Tanta Kringle" or "To Kelsey, Love Zeus" (our bulldog is very giving). I guess what I'm trying to say is that Christmas is such a special time for me because I'm surrounded by the people I love most in the world.
So there you have it audience of avid readers that I make up in my head. Among many other factors, those are some of my favorite things about the Christmas holidays. I'm still not tired. Now all I want to do is watch the Christmas movies on my list. But I'll be home in a week for the most wonderful time of the year with the most wonderful people in the world. Not even the thought of finals can dim my excitement.
I'm gonna go watch How I Met Your Mother. Kelsey out.

I'm gonna go watch How I Met Your Mother. Kelsey out.

Finally caved and made a blog.
So here it is- the blog where I get to rant about me and things I like and pretend like the whole world is reading. All I can say is this is probably a really bad idea- I don't need anything else to distract me from school work. But here we go anyway.
I suppose as this is my first post, I should start by introducing myself. And I suppose that since it's already after midnight, I should make it short. Here goes...
My name is Kelsey Suzanne Costello. I'm a Las Vegas native and I wouldn't trade that for anything in the world. In my humble opinion, Vegas is the best city in the world (GO REBS). I have a family that is dysfunctional and strange but I love most of them anyhow. My parents are polar opposites but they're both incredible people and simply the best parents a kid could ask for. I have an *almost* 18 year old brother (yuck) who is one of the best guys I'll ever have the privilege of knowing. I have a sister who's ten days younger than me and even though she's very loud and kinda odd she's my best friend and knows everything there is to know about me. But of all my family, the two littlest have a special place in my heart that can never be taken by anyone else. Matthew is 7- he's an amazing athlete, a genius 2nd grader who does math in his spare time, and the kind of boy who will make you a bracelet out of a pipe cleaner and beads just because he loves you. Regan is 5- she's a diva, a reluctant kindergartner who'd rather be out having tea parties, and the funniest child you'll ever meet. It's impossible to explain how much they mean to me. The older I've gotten, the more I've noticed that my family members are becoming my best friends and for that I'm grateful.
I'm a pre-communications major with an emphasis in advertising at BYU in Provo, Utah. One day I hope to work for Disney as part of the advertising staff because as this blog continues, readers will learn that I'm a Disney fanatic. Oh and I also want to write a book, be in a movie, write a #1 hit song, become a princess, and lots of other things.
I love sarcasm (obviously). My favorite book is The Princess Bride. PDA makes me physically ill. And I have no time for stupidity and ignorance. But I wear glitter for fun, cannot walk past those sparkly jewelry booths at the mall, and a beautiful dance, a Disney movie, or a poem can turn me into a hopeless romantic for about 6 seconds.
